Enchanting Kerala with Backwater

Destination : Cochin – Periyar – Munnar – Kumarakom – Alappuzha – Kovalam – Trivandrum

Day 01 : Arrive Cochin
Upon arrival at Cochin airport, Welcome Journeys representative will welcome you in our style and escort you to your hotel. Cochin is a major port city on the west coast of India which offers some fascinating snippets of history and culture. Later after some relaxation we embark on a city sightseeing tour visiting Chinese Fishing Nets – one of the most popular tourist attraction that are fixed land installations used for fishing. This unique style of huge cantilevered fishing nets were erected by Chinese traders between 1350 and 1450 AD. Thereafter we visit Hill Palace Museum -the largest archaeological museum in Kerala built in 1865, St Francis Church - the oldest European church in India well-known for its beautiful architecture and ambience, Santa Cruz Basilica - one of the eight Basilicas in India, Dutch Palace (closed on Friday’s) - one of the oldest examples of the Portuguese architecture which was later rebuilt by Dutch. Lastly we visit Jewish Synagogue (Closed on Saturday’s) - oldest Synagogue in the Commonwealth constructed in 1568. Evening enjoy watching a Kathakali dance show and photograph yourself along with the artists wearing colorful costumes as a souvenir. Overnight stay is in Cochin.

Day 02 : Cochin – Periyar (180 kms / 04 ½ hrs)
Morning after having breakfast in hotel drive on a scenic route dotted with plantations of rubber, cardamom, cocoa, green pepper and areca nut, to the wildlife reserve at Periyar. On arrival at Periyar check-in to your pre booked hotel. Periyar is the region’s most visited wildlife sanctuary, sheltering a vigorous population of wild elephant, Indian bison and even a handful of tigers amid its luxuriant forest cover. Afternoon, a visit to Periyar’s famed spice plantations is planned to see blooming cardamom, cinnamom, pepper and other spices in the gardens. In the evening go for a boat ride on lake Periyar for an golden opportunity to sight elephants and other animals. Overnight stay is in Periyar.

Day 03 : Periyar
Morning after breakfast guided trek in the forest go to Periyar Tiger Reserve. Trekking with a local guide familiarizes you to the rare birds, trees & flowers that are come across here. You can even set upon a walk through the plantations filled with the heady fragrance of fresh spice. Evening is free at leisure. Overnight stay is in Periyar.

Day 04 : Periyar – Munnar (130 kms / 3 ½ hrs)

Morning after breakfast drive to the tea estate of Munnar through the beautiful tea plantation. Munnar - a picturesque hill station nestled on the verdant slopes of tea plantations. Located at a lofty height of 1600m, Munnar in South India offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills carpeted with tea plantations. Evening is free at leisure to explore on your own. Overnight stay is in Munnar

Day 05 : Munnar
Morning after having breakfast in hotel, enjoy hiking in the beautiful tea plantation of Munnar. Here you have an opportunity to learn about the various stages of tea processing. Munnar tea gardens spread like a green carpet over hundreds of kilometers, lust green hills, a place so difficult to describe, very low population and too far from pollution, most of the area is covered by Tata tea. Also the Raja Malai to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere at Anamudi, a top peak of Munnar where you can see Neel Thar (mountain goats), Muttupetty dam, Indo Swiss project. Evening also enjoy boating in the Lake at Mattupetty. Overnight stay is in Munnar.

Day 06 :  Munnar – Kumarakom (150 kms / 04 hrs)
Morning after breakfast continue your drive towards Kumarakom - one of the enchanting backwater regions of Kerala. Kumarakom is blessed with unsurpassable naturally bounty. The labyrinthine network of rivers, canals, streams and lagoons which form the famed backwaters offer stunning views and is an ideal place to relax. On arrival at kumarakom, transfer to your pre-booked hotel. Later after some relaxation visit Kumarakom bird sanctuary - a bird sanctuary, located on the banks of the backwaters and renowned for its varied avian population. It is home to various species of birds such as waterfowl, cuckoo, egret, ducks, Siberian Crane and many more. Later after sightseeing drive back to hotel. Overnight stay is in Kumarakom.

Day 07 : Kumarakom – Alleppey (Houseboat)

Morning have your lavish breakfast in hotel and enjoy the ayurvedic massages in the Resort. By the early hours of afternoon, embark your houseboat.  The houseboat will cruise through tropical countryside amidst tranquilizing backwaters and palm trees. In Kerala houseboats are also recognized by the name of Kettuvalloms  where you can sunbathe on the deck or observe the palm fringed landscape from your cabins. Apart from the mesmerizing surroundings it’s the life along the coast that adds a touch of exotica to this experience. As you cruise along the backwaters you can see paddy fields and other charming places. Experience true character of Kerala and relish your lunch on banana leaf in a traditional and healthy way. The crew and chef will be at your disposal and will look after all your requirements. Overnight stay is in houseboat. (Full Board)  

Day 08 : Alleppey – Kovalam (180 kms / 3 ½ hrs)

Morning after having breakfast in houseboat, disembark the houseboat and drive to Kovalam - a picture perfect tropical beach and also recognised as the "Paradise of the South". Kovalam is a beach town on the Arabian Sea in Kerala and has three crescent shaped beaches separated by rocky outcroppings. The shallow waters stretching for hundreds of meters are ideal for swimming. Over the past three decades, the place has been well developed, and now figures prominently on the world tourism map. Kovalam is finding a new significance in the light of several Ayurvedic salons, and recuperation and regeneration resorts which provide a wide variety of Ayurvedic treatments for tourists. On arrival at Kovalam, transfer to hotel. Evening is free at leisure to relax on the beach. Overnight stay is in Kovalam.

Day 10 : Kovalam (Day excursion to Trivandrum)

Morning after breakfast proceed for Trivandrum which is just 16 kms away and a half hour drive from Kovalam and a gateway to one of the most beautiful states in Kerala. The city presides over one of the most scenic states, stretching along the southern coast of the country, with the backwaters of the Arabian sea reaching deep into the verdant countryside, Kerala affords a fascinating experience. On arrival enjoy the sightseeing tour of Trivandrum. Visit Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple which is one of the major attractions in the city one of the richest temples in the world. Sri Chitra Art Gallery which has a good collection Tanjore, Mughal, and Rajput schools of art. Also visit Napier Museum which was built in 1880 and shows a harmonious blending of Kerala, Mughal, Chinese and Italian architectural styles. The Zoo in the city has many shady and delightful walks. Later after sightseeing drive back to Kovalam. Evening is free at leisure to relax on beach. Overnight stay is in Kovalam.

Day 11 : Kovalam – Trivandrum Depart

Morning on time drive to Trivandrum. On arrival transfer to airport to board the flight for onward journey or back home.
